September or January intake? UK Universities

Which intake should I go for? Autumn or

Winter ?

Sometimes it is hard to give a unanimous answer because people’s circumstances are different, but today we are going to try to explain some of the advantages and disadvantages associated with the Autumn and Winter intakes in the Uk.

You need to consider the following parameters:

  • Availability of your chosen program

  • Your academic records

  • Your entrance test scores

  • Job opportunities

  • University’s acceptance rate

  • Your flexibility to go to a certain university

September  is the most popular option, especially for Undergraduate courses. Understandably, if you have met all the criteria you probably wouldn’t like to wait till January to start your course if you can have a place in September.

Usually there is a wider range of courses available if you choose the Autumn or September intake.

Although most universities also have a January intake, that’s is not always the case. So it is worth checking your options. Sometimes the seats might be taken by September students.

The popularity of September intake means also that there is more competition but there is usually more opportunities to get a part -time job in September or a work placement.

In January students are offered a chance to apply if the missed the primary intake. Some universities also have a third intake in May. This intake is usually less competitive since the number of applicants is lower.

January might give you some extra time to do a bit of research and find the university you want to go to.  It can also be a good option if you need more time to get the language tests and any other relevant documentation.

The acceptance rate is based on the merits, so strictly speaking it shouldn’t be affected by the time of the year. There are more availability of courses so you are more likely to be accepted provided you meet all the requirements.

Scholarships are normally merit based but many universities give preference to September intake. Winter students are left with less options to apply for.
